Third VALUE Training School: "Spatial and Temporal Variability in Statistical and Dynamical Downscaling"
The 3rd VALUE training school "Spatial and temporal variability in statistical and dynamical downscaling", will be held from 3 November to 8 November 2014 in Trieste (Italy) hosted by the Earth Systems Physics (ESP) section at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).
The school comprises different modules, containing lectures and practical applications. Starting with an introduction to climate modelling and different downcaling approaches, focus will be given to spatial and temporal variability in statistical and dynamical downscaling. Methods for validating spatial and temporal aspects will be discussed.
Registration: No registration fee is required and participation grants are available (max. 1500 Euro, read the Vademecum, pages 37-39, with the details of COST grants for training schools).
=> Registration is open until October 10th. Register here at the ICTP online application system.
=> More information from the ICTP activities page
PLEASE NOTE:
- Participants are requested to present their own research in a short presentation (3 slides, 5 minutes) on Monday afternoon.
- Participants have to download the accompanying material:
Download both files to your own computer, and follow the instructions in Rglimclim_Preparatory.pdf. Even if you are already familiar with R and RStudio, you must ensure that you have installed the necessary libraries (Sections 4 and 7 in the PDF file).
Any participants who are not familiar with R (or RStudio) must work through Sections 5 and 6 of the PDF file.
- - - IMPORTANT - please download this material:
WeatherGenerators.zip: this contains all of the material for both the lecture and workshop sessions on weather generators. Participants should download this and extract the files to a location on their machine. It creates three subdirectories: HANDOUTS/ , PRACTICALS/ and PREPARATORY/. The HANDOUTS/ directory contains copies of the lecture slides, exercises for use in the lectures and instructions for the practical sessions. The PRACTICALS/ directory contains data and code. The PREPARATORY/ directory is a copy of the preparatory material that has been provided already.
WGData1.zip/WGData2.zip/WGData3.zip: this contains all of the original data that were used to create the case study for the practical sessions, along with the R scripts that were used to process these data. This file is not needed during the workshop, but participants may find it useful in case they need to carry out similar tasks for themselves in the future. These three archives should all be extracted into the same directory, to create subdirectories COST733/, ECA/TEMP and ECA/PRECIP
